    Bird Watching

I was just wondering if we had any birdwatchers here on this forum. I had a teacher in the fourth grade who used to take us out to identify birds. I became very fascinated with it. Are there any other birdwatchers out there?

    Yearly Rant! Leafblowers

I lived in a house at one time that had three big trees in the front yard and they would all loose their leaves at the same time. The yard was full of leaves and I knew I needed to get the rack out but I had just gotten off work and was exhausted. As I was walking into the house I said, "Lord...

Massive great white shark journeys far into South Carolina inland waterway

Well, Jason, let's not cause undue alarm here. After all, no one has actually spotted her yet. Maybe the tag fell off and landed on the back of a turtle. It could be floating along on a jelly fish.

Kayak Alternative for the Dog Owner

My dogs, a poodle and a chow/shepherd mix, both love the water. The would both rather swim along side the boat than ride in it.

    Bring on the ice!

I love ice skating but the only place to ice skate around me is on man-made rinks. I think I would be too afraid to try skating on a pond. I would always worry that the ice was not safe.

    Hunting Tips For The Beginner

I love to camp and hike and I would like to try my hand at hunting. But I have never hunted before. What are some tips you would have for a beginning hunter? Do you recommend a shotgun or bow? Is it better to target bigger game such as deer in the beginning? I'm really interested in getting...

How to get over a fear of heights

As long as my feet are planted on solid ground I'm fine. I know mountains are solid but you won't find me doing any mountain climbing or walking across swinging bridges.

    Olympic National Park 2015

Wow, I have always been cautious about camping in bear country. I have never heard of using electric fences before. It sounds like a great idea.

    Slippery leaves

My son is 7 and he has decided that wet leaves are good for sledding without snow. We have a steep hill in our backyard that he sleds on every year. He was climbing the hill and slipped on some wet leaves. After sliding to the bottom, he got up went the the garage and got out his sled.

    Walking through the leaves

Fall is by far my most favorite time of year. I love the sights, sounds and feel of the season. Fall is definitely the best time of year for hiking.

Anyone been up on a glacier?

Glaciers are some of the most beautiful, natural formations I have ever seen but I have enough respect for them and desire for self-preservation to look and not touch.

    Cajun Style Turkey Cheese

I have never heard of turkey cheese but it sounds delicious. I can't wait to try it, Cappy. How long do you think it would keep refrigerated?

    Favorite show?

The only reality show I ever watched was Survivor. The only reason I watched it was one of the contestants that year was from my hometown.

    Patch It Or Replace It

I have a tent that has a couple slits in the top. Not exactly sure how they got there. One is about 2 1/2 inches long. The other is 3 to 4 inches long. Is it worth trying to repair these types of tears or is it better to just replace the tent? The rest of the tent is still like new.

    Primitive or Modern

I never heard it compared to sleeping on the porch before. My porch has too many nosy neighbors. I do primitive camping to get away from it all.

    Camper vs. Tent

Right now I wouldn't trade in my tent for anything. But in a few years I might change my mind. Roenigk, I have two small children and they enjoy camping and we enjoy camping with them.

Recommended Sleeping Bags For Yukon Camping Trip

Thanks, everyone, for all the helpful hints. I will be doing some backpacking, not sure if we will be doing any water travel yet. I'm still waiting for more details. The trip will be in March or April 2014.

    Primitive or Modern

Well, what do you think? Do you prefer modern campsites or primitive? I like the conveniences of modern campgrounds with the electricity and bathrooms. There is something to be said though for primitive camping. Fewer campers is a big plus. I like getting off by myself, just me and nature...

    Mildewed tent

After cleaning and scrubbing the tent, you may need to re-seal the seams with seam sealant. The tent may need to have more waterproofing applied.

I have the opportunity to travel to Alaska for a Yukon wilderness trip. I am going to need a warmer sleeping bag than what I use in Arizona. Does anyone have any recommendations for good cold weather gear?
