I've used tents [a lot of them] and different kinds of tarps but not a tarp over a tent. I don't know why, but it's a smart thing to do. It just adds so much more protection against the elements.

At one time it wasn't practical because of the weight of the tent and the tarp. Then there was the noise of a tarp flapping in the wind. Today tarps and tents are made of materials that are lighter, more durable, and a lot more waterproof for those downpours and all-day rains. It could be a good combination. It seemed to me that the camping hammock had a lot to do with using tarps over tents. However it began, it's not a bad idea to give it a try. Oh...and another suggestion. Be generous with the guylines, when the winds get nasty you will be glad you did.
