The thing with this particular plum is purely weather related. They will do great 3 or 4 years in a row but a late hard(for us) freeze takes out all the small growing plums. Thats what happened last year. The first week of march we had a 10 hour period below 30 degrees. That is a late hard freeze for us. It took out all the plums and lemons too. Both were too small to take that hard a freeze. Oranges and grapefruit were not affected since they are at that stage larger fruit.

You might try misting them if the weatherman call for a cold snap. That's what the peach growers around here do. The water sticks to the fruit and the keeps the it above freezing until the water freezes.
